Helping Advanced Learners Reach Their Full Potential

City View ISD is committed to providing gifted and talented students with learning experiences that meet their unique academic, social, and emotional needs. Through advanced and differentiated learning opportunities, students are encouraged to think critically and creatively, become self-directed learners, conduct meaningful research, and communicate their ideas through advanced-level products and performances.

About GT

  • The City View ISD Gifted & Talented program serves students in grades K–12 who demonstrate an academic need for gifted services.

Our program focuses on helping students:

    • Become confident, self-directed learners
    • Develop advanced research and communication skills
    • Strengthen creative, critical, abstract, and complex thinking
    • Work with advanced content in greater depth and complexity
    • Learn independently, with other gifted students, and with their non-GT peers

    Our Philosophy

We believe every student should be inspired and equipped to reach his or her full potential in a nurturing and innovative learning environment that meets individual educational, social, and emotional needs.

  • Any City View ISD student in grades K–12 may be referred for Gifted & Talented evaluation.

    Referrals may come from:

    • Parents or guardians
    • Teachers
    • Community members familiar with the student in an academic setting

Written parent or guardian permission is required before a student may participate in the GT screening and assessment process.

  • City View ISD uses multiple measures when determining whether a student demonstrates an educational need for Gifted & Talented services.

The evaluation process includes both qualitative and quantitative information and may include:

    • Cognitive abilities testing
    • Teacher observations and inventories
    • Parent/guardian observations and inventories
    • Additional assessments when determined appropriate by the GT Selection Committee

Referred students are evaluated using a minimum of three appropriate criteria. No single test or measure is used by itself to determine GT placement.

A trained Campus Selection Committee reviews each student's profile and determines the educational placement that best meets the student's needs. Parents and guardians are notified in writing of the committee's decision and are provided information regarding their right to appeal.

  • NOVEMBER

    Referral Window

Referral procedures are shared through district communications, and referrals are accepted from parents, teachers, and community members.

    JANUARY–MARCH

    Screening & Assessment

Students are screened and assessed after written parent/guardian permission has been received.

    FEBRUARY

Kindergarten GT services begin prior to March 1.

    MAY

    Grades 1–12 Identification

The GT Committee reviews screening information for students in grades 1–12. Parents of identified students are contacted for permission to receive services.

    AUGUST

    Services Begin

Newly identified students in grades 1–12 begin receiving GT services.

  • Gifted education at City View ISD is designed to provide students with learning experiences that go beyond the regular curriculum.

GT students have access to advanced, accelerated, and differentiated learning opportunities designed to meet their individual abilities and areas of identification.

    Learning opportunities may include:

    • Flexible pacing
    • Advanced instructional materials
    • Content acceleration when appropriate
    • Flexible grouping
    • Opportunities to work with other gifted learners
    • Independent research
    • Texas Performance Standards Projects
    • GT Power Hour
    • In-school and, when possible, out-of-school enrichment opportunities

Each identified GT student has an individual learning plan that documents student goals and learning opportunities designed to best meet the student's needs.

    Elementary GT Services

At the elementary level, gifted students may receive services through designated GT classrooms or GT cluster classrooms depending on the number of identified students at a grade level.

These classroom structures allow GT-trained teachers to provide advanced, accelerated, and differentiated instruction while giving students opportunities to work with other gifted learners.

    Kindergarten

Students identified for GT services in Kindergarten begin receiving services no later than March 1. Kindergarten services include differentiated instruction based on student needs, including flexible pacing, flexible grouping, and flexible use of instructional materials.

    Secondary GT Services

At the secondary level, GT students continue to receive advanced and differentiated learning opportunities.

GT classroom placement strategies and teacher-training requirements also apply to Honors, Dual Credit, and other advanced courses in which gifted students receive services.

  • Students enrolling in City View ISD from a public school, private school, or homeschool setting have access to the district's GT admission, assessment, and appeals process.

    Previously Identified GT Students

If a student in grades 1–12 was identified for gifted and talented services by a previous public school district, City View ISD will review the student's records within 30 school days.

The district will compare the previous district's identification criteria with CVISD criteria, and the Campus Selection Committee will determine the appropriate placement and services for the student.
